I wish you had dropped in my my webcast comparing LotusLive, hosting and DR. You are not getting Lotus Connections as you know it, it is named the same however.

The same goes for Domino based iNotes, you are instead getting the Outblaze back end.

My company is a Lotus Notes/Domino shop. Much to my dismay, we choose SalesForce (instead of an integrated solution with Notes) but that's a conversation for another day.

So just last week, we get on a call with them about better integrating with Lotus Notes and they came right out and told us that it was a dead platform and that no one uses it.

He's got a point, though. However much I love Lotus Notes, and the possibilities in the product, the needs in my organisation is moving more and more away from application based solutions, and more and more towards web-based solutions.

I don't think the Lotus Notes client will exist in the form it does today in a few years from now. IBM's solutions will be more based around mash ups, widgets and similar solutions. They're already on their way with Quickr and Connections (even if the API of those applications leave a lot to be desired.)

In our new intranet, which we are developing these days, email, Sametime, Quickr, Connections and several other online solutions will be mashed together in a control panel. And there are plans to create web based solutions of several of our Notes applications.

Love Mr Bentsen's quote. Tired of those comparaison with Exchange, tired about Lotus Notes dead or alive. Could we just work effectively with the tools that we are effective with?

What about the client? If we could not serve him effectivy with the tools that we have, let's bring new, improve and more effective tools.

At the end, the real client won't make any difference if you did it with this tool or this one, as it meets their needs.

@tonyo: I wouldn say that sharepoint is "search". This is the biggest problem there. And yes... you need additional licences in order to get advanced one, which is not currently very advanced after a more deeper review!

Information management? Common! What is that? An SQL engine? Be more specific?

At the end out of the departmental use Sharepoint has no real expertise in global corporation appoach!

The products are simply not comparable!

Check out the 2010 offerings? OK, when are they going to be available? I need to do something NOW... Oh, yeah, and I need to run it on Linux. Is that going to be supported. I've had a look around the Microsoft website and it looks like you've "leveraged" alot of our marketing material around Connections. I guess when you're copying the innovations by others it's quicker to do that. So, actually, I've changed my mind, I'm not going to wait, I'm not going to buy-into a full Microsoft stack. I prefer to talk to people about an open solution. A solution that will run on whatever they've got in the data center without the need for your latest propriety version of desktop productivity products... while I'm sure the UI and functionality is going to be nice, it's not worth dragging all the Microsoft baggage to get it all working.

have a look at the 2010 offerings.

probably the biggest reason to go to Sharepoint is that's it's overall an integrated platform for information management, search, collaboration and ECM. to get that from IBM, you need multiple, mis matched products. :)

It's a very solid product, nice UI, some interesting integration. There's also a lot of ex-Loti over there. Their offering certainly lacks the robustness of Lotus Connections. IBM has lots of integrations to the places I work all day long, the Notes client.. my inbox has really evolved into being a collaboration dashboard. I wish I'd invented "collaboration dashboard" but I swiped it from John Allessio... but, it doesn't make it any less relevant.
